Proving
the polar

PB72 is in her sea-trial phase and performing as expected. Think of every cell of the polar as a target that has to be found with sail trim, foil trim and crew weight. About ten have been sailed so far, and every one has hit its predicted number. These are the speeds measured:

True windWind angleBoat speed
12–13 kn110°27 kn
18 kn130°38 kn
20 kn85°39 kn

All of this was achieved with the foils trimmed by hand, before the instruments were fully calibrated. The automatic flight-control system, which the predictions assume, comes online after calibration, and that is when she is expected to reach the full numbers below.

Sea trials · onto the foil

Watch her
lift

Filmed from her side in light air: the bow first digs low, then comes back up as the righting-moment foil takes the load and she accelerates.

The foil lifts most of the boat out of the water, but never all of it. PB72 is a skimming boat, so she stays low and stable. If she comes down off the foil, it is a gentle re-entry, not the spectacular crash that high-flying foilers are known for.

“At thirteen, you’re doing seventeen knots. Fourteen, you’re doing twenty-six.”
