Dr. Pat Benz explaining PB72 at the design boards

The Story

A scientist’s
experiment

A chemist, a pilot and an inventor. And a decade-long question about how much of a big catamaran can be lifted out of the sea.

“All these giant corporations are making big sailboats… but one guy builds the fastest cat by himself.”

The name came first. Extreme H2O was a contact lens material Pat Benz invented, one that never lost water or dried out on the eye.

Decades later it became the name of a 66-foot racing catamaran he rescued from a bankrupt yard in South Africa, rebuilt with Morrelli & Melvin, and sailed to the first multihull finish of the 2015 Transpac.

Then, over dinner in Sarasota with Pete Melvin and engineer Ferdinand van West, he asked a simple question: what if we started again, from scratch? PB72 is the answer.

“What if we tried this again? … Just start from scratch.”
